What is NYC SHRM? 

NYC SHRM (New York City Society for Human Resource Management) is the premier professional association for HR leaders, practitioners, and business partners. As an affiliate chapter of SHRM National, NYC SHRM provides opportunities for HR professionals to connect, learn, and grow through networking events, educational programs, special interest groups, and volunteer leadership opportunities. Our mission is to advance the HR profession and support the development of people and workplaces across the NYC community.

NYC SHRM is an official chapter affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest HR professional society. While SHRM National provides resources, certification, and advocacy at the national and global level, NYC SHRM focuses on serving HR professionals within the New York City metropolitan area. Members of NYC SHRM gain access to local networking, professional development, and community-building opportunities, while also benefiting from SHRM National’s broader resources and thought leadership.

Yes. NYC SHRM is a dual membership chapter, which means you must be a member of both SHRM National and NYC SHRM to join. 

The only exceptions are: 

  • In-Transition Memberships – Available for HR professionals between roles. 
 
  • Student Memberships – Available for those enrolled in HR, business, or related academic programs. 

Joining NYC SHRM connects you to both a local professional network and the larger HR community, giving you the tools and support to succeed.

Membership FAQs

How do I join NYC SHRM? 

As of January 1, 2022, NYC SHRM became a dual-membership chapter with SHRM . This means members pay
both their SHRM National and NYC SHRM Chapter dues together at the same time, directly through SHRM.

To Join: 
 

  1. Visit the SHRM Store Dual Membership Page
  2. Add NYC SHRM as your local chapter when enrolling or renewing your SHRM membership.


If you experience any issues while navigating the website, SHRM’s Member Support team can walk you through the process: 

Membership in NYC SHRM is part of a dual membership with SHRM National.

The cost includes: 
 

  • SHRM National Membership – current annual rate set by SHRM 

  • NYC SHRM Chapter Dues – $110 per year (added to your SHRM National dues)

    When you join or renew through the SHRM Store, both dues are collected together in one transaction. 

To join NYC SHRM as a Student Member, you need to email the NYC SHRM office at office@nycshrm.org and provide proof of your current enrollment in an HR, business, or related academic program. 


  • Cost: Free for 1 year  
  • Student Members receive access to NYC SHRM events, networking opportunities, and professional development programs tailored for students.

    Once your student credentials are verified, the NYC SHRM team
will guide you through completing your membership. 

If you are an HR professional currently between roles, you can join NYC SHRM as an In-Transition Member. To apply, email the NYC SHRM office at office@nycshrm.org. 

  • Cost: $55 for 6 months 
 
  • In-Transition Members receive access to NYC SHRM events, networking opportunities, and professional development programs to help support their career transition. 



    Once your eligibility is confirmed, the NYC SHRM team
will guide you through completing your membership.

NYC SHRM membership is valid for one year from the date of enrolment or renewal.

Renewal Process: 
 

  • In-Transition Members Renewal for Professional Members is completed
through the SHRM Store as part of the dual membership with SHRM National.
  • Renewing on time ensures uninterrupted access to member
benefits, events, and professional development opportunities.


Since NYC SHRM is a dual chapter with SHRM National, all membership payments and refunds are handled directly through SHRM.

Yes! Many employers choose to cover SHRM National and NYC SHRM Chapter dues for their HR staff as part of professional development and employee engagement programs. 


To have your employer pay:

  1. Contact your HR or finance department to request payment.
  2. Use the SHRM Store to complete your membership purchase, and indicate that your employer will cover the cost.
  3. Some employers may pay via invoice or reimbursement—check with SHRM Member Support if needed.





    Employer-sponsored membership ensures you can take full advantage of local networking,
    professional development, and SHRM resources without personally covering the dues.

To update your member profile or contact information,
simply log in to your NYC SHRM member profile on our website.
 

If you are locked out of your NYC SHRM member account,
email the NYC SHRM office at office@nycshrm.org to reset your login details.

What types of events does NYC SHRM host?

NYC SHRM offers a wide range of events designed to support professional development, networking, and community engagement for HR professionals, including:

  • Networking Events – Opportunities to connect with peers, mentors, and HR leaders across industries.

These events help HR professionals stay informed, earn recertification credits, and build meaningful connections in the NYC HR community.

Yes, most NYC SHRM events are open to non-members at a higher registration price. The only exceptions are internal meetings,
such as certain Special Interest Group (SIG) sessions or member-only committees, which are reserved exclusively for members.

Non-members are encouraged to attend open events to network, learn, and experience the benefits of NYC SHRM before
deciding to join. Event registration pages will clearly indicate whether an event is open to non-members and the applicable pricing.

Yes! Many NYC SHRM events offer SHRM and HRCI recertification credits. 


  • Webinars – Generally offer 1 SHRM and HRCI credit each.

  • Annual Legal & Legislative Event – Offers 4–6 credits.

  • Biennial Conference or Spring Summit – Offer between 8–13 credits, depending on the program.

  • Volunteering with NYC SHRM – Members can also earn recertification credits for qualifying volunteer service.

 

If you are an NYC SHRM member in good standing, you can track and pull these credits directly from your member profile.

If you are interested in speaking or presenting at an NYC SHRM event,
please fill out our Speaker Proposal Form: Submit a Proposal.

All proposals are reviewed by the NYC SHRM program committee, and selected speakers
will be contacted with details regarding event logistics and presentation opportunities.
 

Committees & Volunteering FAQ

How can I get involved with a committee or SIG?

To join a Committee or Special Interest Group (SIG), you must be an NYC SHRM member. 

To get started: 

  1. Fill out the Committee/SIG Interest Form.

     

  2. Email volunteer@nycshrm.org to express your interest and connect with the appropriate committee or SIG leader.

    Participating in committees and SIGs is a great way to expand your professional
network, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the HR community in NYC.

Yes! NYC SHRM offers a variety of leadership opportunities for members
